Current and former students talk about Sharon's teaching:

** I had the privilege of having Sharon Stohrer as my voice teacher for four years.  Because of her teaching, I was able to grow tremendously as a young singer and performer. Along with gaining knowledge of the vocal mechanism, I also learned healthy habits to develop in my daily life that would benefit my singing.  Together, these are invaluable tools, especially to young singers.  Without her support and guidance with performance anxiety, it would have taken me much longer to be confident and performance ready.  Sharon's support has been a lifeline for me in my career, and still is today.  Lauren Stocker, Houston Grand Opera Chorus Member

**Sharon is nurturing, knowledgeable and an incredible asset to a rising professional singer. Her holistic approach helped me learn to be grounded in both my mind and body, which helped give me the courage to sing my best.  Annie Huckaba, Actor, Dollywood

** The instruction Ms. Stohrer offers to every student is invaluable.  She invests time in getting to know the singer she is working with and from there, offers appropriate and healthy technique that will help the performer thrive.  I'm fortunate to have been a product of her teaching and take her approach with me into my own teaching.  Kevin Buno, Music Teacher, Guilford CT high school

** Sharon is an excellent teacher! She helped me when I suffered through a period of high anxiety in my singing and really opened up my voice. She also gives sound career advice that is both positive and practical.  Heather Keith, Assistant Teaching Artist, Chicago Opera Theatre

** Our lessons were technically superior and always a fun experience! She helped foster my love of singing, and I pass that joy to my own students today. I highly recommend her .    Colleen Marie LeGere, Private Voice Instructor,  Glenville, NY

** I am so thankful for her guidance and support in my quest to sing better and love what I was doing. Furthermore, she is an incredible caring person, whom I loved working with and I to this day consider her my friend. I have also read her book and she has great insight into the development of the young voice.   Carol Jurs, Music Together Teacher, Schenectady, NY

** Sharon Stohrer's talent and knowledge of voice is tremendous.  But it is her teaching that is second to none.  She taught so much to me.  She is incredibly insightful and knew what I needed to learn.  Sarah Platek, Music Teacher, Bethlehem NY

Sharon knows how to find a student's strengths and make them feel like super powers. Her appreciation of her students for exactly who and where they are, right at this very moment, is what makes them feel at ease in lessons and performance. As a voice teacher now, I strive to convey the same lessons and support that Sharon provided.  Cara Picone, Private Voice Instructor, New York, NY

What Goes On In A Voice Lesson?
"I am a supportive, encouraging teacher who uses a variety of approaches to help each singer realize his/her potential with maximum freedom and ease.  Because the body is our instrument, we spend some lesson time attending to posture, often incorporating yoga or other kinds of stretches.  Next we spend some time on  breathing strategies, followed by warming up the voice through various exercises.  We then apply ourselves to songs, using the challenges presented in the music to grow technically.  I am open to many styles of music, but I do ask that students work on some classical repertoire to help in building technique.  Each lesson is focused on the student: what ideas, concepts, and techniques work best for her or him."

Studio Policies:
 *  While a regular lesson is best for vocal growth, the demands of schedules and budgets dictate that the student set the frequency and duration    (30 minutes or hour) of the lesson.

*   Students are strongly encouraged to record their lessons.  Most tablets or phones will do this with ease and good quality.

*   Photocopying music is in violation of copyright law.  Students are asked to purchase scores and build their own vocal library.

*   Payment is made at the conclusion of each lesson, unless prior arrangements have been made.

*   Please give 24 hours’ notice of cancellation, to avoid being charged.  Sudden illness and true emergencies are exceptions.

*   An accompanist is needed only when the student is working on advanced repertoire.

Reviews and Raves
  • "The Singer's Companion is practical without being pedestrian. Stohrer distills useful counsel on a bevy of topics in an eminently accessible style, and the last chapter is an eloquent plea for respecting the sacred nature of singing. Her application of the NATS Code of Ethics to a set of guidelines for singers should be posted on every studio door and in every practice room. Voice pedagogues should put this volume on the recommended reading list for their students."
NATS Journal of Singing, March/April 2008

  • "This is a useful worktable or bedside manual with the purpose of being a 'guide' or 'bible' about singing. There is discussion about things that are not in any other book in the current book market concerning overall healthy singing... A thought-provoking resource that is both inspirational and helpful. This would be a wonderful addition to anyone's library."
MTNA American Music Teacher, June 1, 2007
