What is performance anxiety?

According to several studies, performance anxiety is the number one fear in this country – with performance “failure” feared by many people more than death!  Even so, most music students are reluctant to speak of it, believing that they are alone, that something is wrong with them, or that fellow performers do not share their struggles.

Further compounding the problem is that the symptoms of performance anxiety are rarely the same from person to person and the degree of stage fright can vary.

DO YOU:

  • Generally feel okay, but curiously, "choke" on important auditions or competitions?
  • Get butterflies, dry mouth, shaky knees when you speak or perform in front of an audience?
  • Sabotage your own best efforts?
  • Find your heart racing, your breath short and your thoughts scattered when performing?
  • Procrastinate in practicing, applying for auditions/competitions, or getting your materials out?
  • Feel like you never perform even close to how well you do in practice?

IF YOU ANSWERED YES TO ANY ONE OF THE QUESTIONS, PERFORMANCE ANXIETY IS AFFECTING YOU!!!

I think your anxiety coaching is fabulous. I share what I learned from you with my students and remember it myself as I prepare for a performance. Thanks for being a great teacher on this subject.  Janet Thompson, Kenyon College faculty, Gambier, OH

Everyone who attended Sharon's workshops here was immediately better equipped to handle the stress of musical performance.  Besides being a first-class musician, Ms. Stohrer is a dynamic public speaker.  She captivates her audiences whether they are beginning musicians or seasoned professionals.  Her methods for dealing with stress are valuable to both singers and instrumentalists.  Paul Evoskevich, College of St. Rose faculty, Albany, NY

When I started my second career as a Presbyterian minister, I was very uncomfortable in the pulpit.  Sharon introduced me to some helpful techniques relating to meditation, breathing, and posture that I continue to use 5 years later.  I appreciated Sharon’s compassionate and gentle approach to helping me overcome my nervousness and anxiety.    Roger Au, Prince of Peace Presbyterian Church, Pickerington, OH
